Creator Description Encoded Archival Context
نویسنده
چکیده
Encoded Archival Context (EAC) is an ongoing initiative within the international archival community to design and implement a prototype standard based on Extensible Markup Language (XML) for encoding descriptions of record creators. The primary developers of this prototype standard are members if the international archival community. The description of individuals, families, and organizations that create records is an essential component of the documentary evidence of human activity. Identifying record creating entities, recording the names or designations used by and for them, describing their essential functions, activities, and characteristics, and the dates and places they were active is an essential component of the management of archival records. Creator description facilitates both access to and interpretation of records.

This volume covers all things EAD and EAC happening in Europe in 19 articles by authors from France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Poland, Spain, Switzerland, and the United States. As Encoded Archival Description (EAD) of guides to archival and manuscript collections has matured in usage since the introduction of v.1 in 1998, implementation throughout the world has spread. متن کاملEffective Access to Digital Assets: An XML-based EAD Search System
This paper focuses on the question of effective access methods, by developing novel search tools that will be crucial on the massive scale of digital asset repositories. We illustrate concretely why XML matters in digital curation by describing an implementation of a baseline digital asset search system that is fully XML-driven. The system aims to provide better access to archival material thro...
متن کاملEncoded Archival Description (EAD): Adoption and Implementation
Encoded Archival Description (EAD) provides archival researchers with more in-depth contentrelated and contextual information than was previously available anywhere but in the physical repository. This has led to its use throughout the United States and in many other countries to increase access to archival and manuscript collections. Furthermore, EAD is one means of managing metadata that desc...
متن کاملEncoded Archival Description for Numismatic Collections
Developed in the 1990s and revised in 2002, Encoded Archival Description (EAD) is an XML encoding standard commonly used in libraries and archives in the United States and Europe to describe collections of paper materials, for example, manuscripts and photographs. Numerous physical, organizational, and categorical facets of the collections can be described in EAD, including physical materials, ...
متن کاملEncoded Archival Description: Data Quality and Analysis
In order to authenticate the meaning of collections and to preserve their evidentiary value, archivists create documents (finding aids) that describe the provenance and original order of the records (MacNeil, 1995). Metadata standards such as Encoded Archival Description (EAD) enable finding aids to be encoded, searched, and displayed online. However, recent research has begun to draw attention...
